Advanced Level 8th Grade Art Class will be structured similar to an independent study course.
Students will be given the Georgia Performance Standards for 8th Grade Visual Arts. They will be responsible for checking completed standards with the teacher, which will show their mastery of the course.
During the course, we will have 1-1.5 week rotations of drawing, painting, sculpture, and other various types of art such as printmaking, fiber arts, weaving, installations, collage, jewelry making, etc. The student will be told their basic type of project, and occasionally the theme. They will then be choosing their subject matter and plan their approach to complete the project. It is highly encouraged that students begin researching for their projects and have an idea of what they wish to accomplish at the beginning of the year.
All summative projects will be graded on a rubric. Students will also have sketchbook assignments and we will study composition, elements, careers, and discover what it takes to be in the art field in today's world. It is VERY IMPORTANT that students understand that this will be a rigorous class with an advanced pace. They will need to make sure that they keep up with their assignments to do well. We will enjoy more freedom with this format and it is important the student respect the need for a good work ethic within the course. It will also be enjoyable as students will get to find their unique style in a less structured manner!
Students in advanced art will be allowed to use regular classroom supplies. Occasionally they may choose to work on a project that requires outside supplies. These will need to be provided by the student. If a student is not sure what supplies are acceptable, they may discuss it to determine what will work best.
Best behavior and a high performance & responsibility level in advanced art is required. This class will be trusted with some of the coolest projects in the school and it is imperative to be able to be models for other students within the building.
