Welcome to art class! I am so excited to be working with you this year and can’t wait to see the great things you create! J
Class Summary:
Visual Arts is offered to most students in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. We follow the Georgia Performance Standards for Middle Grades Visual Arts. Beginning 2016-17, we will be offering an Advanced 8th grade art. This will only be offered via application process done at the end of the 7th grade year. In Visual Arts, we focus heavily on studio art, which will include experience in drawing, painting, and sculpture along with technical skill building, daily creativity practice, and art history. Each grade level will have unique, new projects tailored to their skill levels.
In Advanced 8th grade art, we will move at a faster pace, complete higher level projects and be expected to use the class in more of an independent study fashion. Students can get the most benefit from their course by practicing regularly, and researching additional information outside of class. Museum visits and collaboration with other artists are highly encouraged.
Grading Policy:
PLEASE check your grades and Infinite Campus regularly. If a grade issue arises, let me know as soon as possible. Students are not graded on art ability and talent, but on completion of requirements usually measured by a rubric. Grading will follow the school guidelines in the student handbook and work is expected on the due date, unless an excused absence occurs. The student will have the number of excused days out to turn in the project. Formative "daily type" grades count 20%, and Summative "extended project" type grades count 80%. Work MUST be submitted into Artsonia unless students have technology issues. It may then be emailed or submitted in It's Learning. The student must notify the teacher by the due date if there are issues uploading.
Please see the teacher if there are problems with timeliness on a project. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for missed work upon absence. Projects count more heavily than informal work and it is important to prioritize time and be diligent on them. Late work is assessed at 5 points per day deduction. If a low grade is received on a summative project, the student may resubmit with parent permission via email or written form with late points deducted unless submitted within 2 days after the due date. PLEASE EMAIL MS PARKS IF YOU RESUBMIT AFTER THE ORIGINAL DUE DATE.
Behavior:
The art room is unique because there is often a lot of movement and some supplies that could damage clothing. Collaborating with other students is often helpful in creating work as well. Noise and movement levels will be monitored using a 3-2-1 visual card system as well as verbal communications to help classes manage their own behaviors so that the environment is productive to all. Behavior issues will be addressed by assigning point loss for expectation negligence, with parent contact, and or administrative referrals. Please read our "Class Rules" tab for specific rules for the class.
Websites:
We will be integrating a good deal of technology into our art class. We will use an online website to display and upload our art. The students will be required to upload finished projects and write artist statements for their summative grades. We will also use other various apps and technology. Devices are welcome in class, but he devices will remain put away and turned off unless specified. I will be posting an indicator on the board each day in regards to whether technology is acceptable for the particular lesson. Repeated technology violations may result in a student not being able to have the technology privilege in art class.
Supplies:
Students are required to bring their art supplies every day. Not bringing supplies is not being prepared for class and many times it means stopping other student's learning to obtain the missing items. Sketchbooks may be kept in our classroom cabinet. However, anything left in the art room cannot be guaranteed as we have around 180 students per day coming in and out. If a sketchbook is lost, it will be the responsibility of the student to replace it. It is also encouraged that students take their sketchbooks with them each day. The more creative practicing the student does, the more they will get out of the course. If there is ever an issue obtaining supplies or a problem occurs, please just discuss it with me and I'll be happy to help find a solution.
Parent Involvement:
As they say, "it takes a village to raise a child"! I highly encourage your involvement in my class. PLEASE email me at anytime should questions arise regarding the course. I also would love to have volunteers for the classroom...Please sign up on our It's Learning link if you can help! If you have resources that can help build our program, please contact me. We always need donations for the kids. If you have any concerns or you need me to know anything about your student, please reach out to me via email.
